What's the difference between traditional and contemporary ? Why the distinction?

"Contemporary" are styles being produced now, the designs of the moment.

"Traditional" styles similar with the past, the modern designs of before the Industrial Revolution.

"Contemporary" is of it's time, innovative, and forward-looking but not limited to a single stylistic idea. It incorporates the stylistic twist of the machine age: an absence of ornament, structures of steel or concrete, large expanses of glass, a whitewash or another minimal exterior expression, and open floor plans.

While "Traditional" recalls styles produced in the early/mid 20th-century.

Painting your kitchen cabinets can be a great way to really open up a space and give your home personality. However, there are some important things to think about before taking the plunge.

Are my cabinets paintable?

Wood and metal cabinets take paint well but these surfaces will need to be sanded down and cleaned thoroughly before any paint is applied. If you have laminate or melamine finishes you can still resurface, but it is highly recommended you find a professional to get the job done right.

What type of Paint will I need?

You want a strong, high quality paint that will withstand daily use. Satin or Semi-gloss paints are examples of a more durable paint. You want to layer it on the surfaces for a beautiful finish and to give the paint strength.

What tools will I need?

Spray Guns create the cleanest finish, however, if you are not experienced using this tool try it out on some scraps first. The quickest and simplest tool to use is a foam roller. They leave a very light pattern on the surface but you can paint with speed and consistency.

How much downtime are we talking here?

The amount of time can change based on the size of your kitchen, but typically you can expect to be without a functional kitchen for at least four days, including drying time.

While Granite is more popular, laminate has developed into a cost effective, long lasting, attractive alternative. Laminate tops have come a long way since the 1920s by developing more textures and colors. But its appeal goes deeper than just looks. Laminate tops have proven to withstand stains, heat, and impact as well as other more expensive materials.

Let’s Talk Prices

Laminate is an inexpensive option for those looking to remodel. Typically it costs a lot less than other materials, about $10 to $50 a square foot installed. Jemson offers different laminates to pick from. Stop by our showroom to look at samples and try them in your home.

Age Isn’t a Factor

Countertops take a lot of abuse over the years. Laminate has been tested for durability against dings, scratches, scorch marks, and knife slices and resists most damages, stains, and heat. Unfortunately laminate is easily scratched by knives and isn’t repairable. So it’s a good idea to keep a cutting board at hand.

Goodbye, Ugly Seams

So we’ve established that Granite is more popular, but laminate is making a comeback. Brands like Formica and Wilsonart offer all different kinds of textures and color patterns to choose from, providing the exact style you need to tie a room together. Even better, that ugly seamed edge is gone! Now you can choose to add a decorative edge, effectively eliminating those ugly seams and black lines.

When should you remodel?

Summer months are considered to be the ideal time for remodeling, but most people don’t know that it’s actually more efficient to do those larger projects in the off season.

To put it in perspective, you wouldn’t go to a popular restaurant during peak hours. You’ll risk receiving bad service and an unpleasant experience.

However, remodeling during the off season is the perfect time to plan ahead and get things in motion before the next big rush, essentially allowing you to finish your project earlier. And with business being slow this time of year your designer can work more closely with you, giving you the best service with little to no back tracking or mistakes!

Who to hire?

Hire someone with at least three years of experience and that can take you far in your project goals. A good contractor can help you with the process of remodeling.

Planning Ahead.

Think of the long-term maintenance, energy costs, and repairs to include in your budget.

Managing and Budgeting.

If you are a looking to save a little bit on your project, why not buy from your contractor? Ask if they have an outlet you can browse. Maybe there is something you can swap out and put a little extra cash back into the budget.

Donate your trash.

If you like to live "Green" then look for a local business that will recycle or re-use your old kitchen cabinets and countertops.
